Applying Management Principles to Life
Management concepts or methodologies as applied to the industry have somewhere been derived from Life principles themselves. Probably derived from texts pertaining to history, mythology, religion etc. that provide insights into the way life has and should be spent. Some of the guidelines adopted by these concepts have helped in validating these principles and made them more acceptable to recent times.
We all have a professional life and a personal life, but today the gap between the two seems to be widening faster than we had imagined.
Management Principles
Various thinkers in Management contemplated the use of principles that could be applied across the spectrum of businesses. The objective was clear & simple – to bring more control over day-to-day operations, remove all person dependent and gut-based decisions from daily workings and to Scale up & Expand. Their underlying principle being – if it is consistent and measurable, only then will it be controllable!
At present we are staying in the VUCA world, where the Business life is more Volatile, Uncertain, Complex and Ambiguous. We are currently into the 3rd decade of the 21st century, and things are not getting any simpler. Globalization, which started around 30 years ago, has made things more accessible, thus helping businesses to expand geographically at a very high speed which was not thinkable earlier. In this context, the markets have exploded, the reach has increased, thus management has to act faster and faster to cope up with this ever-changing world.
Personal Space
Whereas on the personal front, our life is a complex combination of relations, emotions, events, circumstances and situations. Gliding through all of them steadily is what makes the life journey sometimes exciting, unpredictable, uncertain, sometimes precarious but overall, quite interesting.
Our life journey is full of aspirations, hurdles, expectations, procrastination, decisions and actions. As compared to what Management frameworks cover, individual life is much more complex and uncertain. There are more variables to overcome, unexpected surprises to face, a roller coaster ride consisting of – joy, pain, suffering, happiness, loneliness, togetherness, fear, desires, swinging moods, rejections, acceptance … and many such feelings and emotions. So, the question is that can Management concepts be applied to life using a slightly structured process that management principles profess?
Social Media Intrusion
With the advent of Social Media and its intrusion in our lives, like never before, we are at the hands of technology juggling between screen time and the time we spend with our family and colleagues. Today, Social Media is an intrinsic part of both these aspects of our life, be it Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, WhatsApp, WeChat, X, TikTok, Snapchat … and others. On the one hand it helps us leverage our markets and professional life and on the other hand it helps us jostle around with our acquaintances and family getting a feeling of constantly being in touch.
Technology Intrusion
The ever-changing world has impacted individual lives with increased uncertainty, fast technological changes, the need for adaptability and increased interconnectedness. You need to continuously keep learning and adapting and develop a proactive mentality. The advent of AI has made things even more interesting with Chat GPT, Google Gemini, Microsoft Copilot and a host of other AI Platforms intruding into our daily workspace. The bottom line is that your comfort zone will keep changing from time to time and you must keep adapting to accommodate yourself to the change. This puts us under immense pressure and stress to make both these aspects of our life meet.
Hence there is a strong need to align both our professional and our personal lives, in a more inclusive manner without bringing the stress from one to the other. What could be the answer to this is what we need to work upon to have a more balanced and memorable life experience.
What is your opinion about these aspects of our lives? Do share your thoughts and opinions and the best approach you think can help us retain our sanity.
